01 — Guided Learning Guide

Chapter 16 is easiest to learn as a sequence of organizational decisions rather than a list of job titles.

Learning sequence

  1. Current State and Fit
  2. Operating-Model Foundations
  3. The Five Operating Models
  4. Model Selection and Evolution
  5. Ten Critical Success Factors
  6. Building the DMO from Existing Capability
  7. Committees and Stakeholders
  8. CDO, Governance, DQ, EA, and Global Interfaces
  9. Organizational, Executive, and Business Roles
  10. IT/Hybrid Roles and Decision Rules

Study rule

For every organizational scenario, ask in this order:

What does the company already look like? → Where is accountability now? → What new capability is needed? → Which model changes the least while supplying that capability? → Which body or role owns the exact responsibility?

This order prevents the two biggest errors in Chapter 16: choosing the most formal structure by default and choosing roles by title instead of responsibility.
